Ground Hog Trap Control Products

Identifying and Controlling a Groundhog Problem

Woodchucks, also known as ground hogs, are the largest member of the squirrel family, and we have them more often than not invading our gardens and crops, where they eat and destroy vegetables and the landscape.

The Woodchuck is typically found in open and closed forest and brushy areas that will give them protection and cover from predators. Their natural predators foxes, coyotes and hawks, and snakes can be of danger to young that are kept inside the burrows. They can dig very large burrows in fields and golf courses, cemeteries, lawns and your landscaping beds. Woodchucks are known to leave the dirt at the point of excavation. They can dig burrows in and under slabs and foundations, and in dikes and levees that can then cause rain out issues. The woodchuck is unique in that it is one of the only animal types that truly hibernate, creating themselves burrows beneath frost lines to lay dormant in during winter months.

Control Techniques

You can perform habitat modification that will prevent them from being able to enter your garden or property area. You will have to extend the fence at least 24 inches in the ground. This prevents the woodchucks from digging under to gain entry, and will most likely keep them out of a yard as long as other access points are unavailable.

The best method for woodchuck control is to utilize safe, human animal traps. You will want one that is at least 32” x 12” x 10” and it should be placed in the runways or burrow entrances and baited with vegetables like tomatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, cabbage, or fresh alfalfa. Humane animal traps are an efficient method for woodchuck control. There are no rodenticides that are currently registered for use on woodchucks/groundhogs.
