Maybe you are looking to be preventative after you do all this work and so a pre-emergent might be added to the arsenal of weed control and prevention. These are available in both granular and liquid form and should be applied 2 times a year early fall before winter weeds will germinate and then in early spring before any weeds are allowed to sprout. I recommend spraying your weeds, after pulling and all that good manual labor. Then apply a good granular pre-emergent to the area, plant your bedding plants and then put a good layer of mulch down. This should create the perfect storm and get you the best weed control.
NON SELECTIVE HERBICIDES
Postemergence, nonselective herbicides are classified as either contact or systemic. A Non Selective Herbicide cannot differentiate between weeds you would like to kill and the plants you want unharmed. Contact herbicides kill only the green tissues that are contacted by the spray. Systemic herbicides move within the plant from the point of application to other plant parts. There are some systemic herbicides are can move easier and further in plants than others. The amount of movement systemically also depends on the season you are applying the herbicide, you want the plant to be actively growing so that the herbicide can be taken in systemically quickly and effectively. Therefore, to obtain optimum pest control, herbicides must be applied at the time of year when weeds are most susceptible and actively growing. We also recommend that you add to your herbicide a spray pattern indicator, which is a blue dye that will wear off in 24 hours, but allows you to see that you have gotten good coverage on the weed. Secondly, we recommend also adding a surfactant, which is a product that helps the herbicide perform at the best level, keeps it stuck to the plant and gets it absorbed quicker into the plants system. The cost for these 2 items is very low and you use only about a tablespoon per gallon, but they will pay for themselves 10 fold.
