Termites are social insects that live in a colony; living underground, in wood, or in nests and moving in passageways that are hidden from sunlight and protected from air currents and excessive moisture loss. They have very specific scent capabilities so that they can recognize each other, and keep their distance from other colonies. The colonies consist of workers, soldiers and reproducers, with the workers making up the largest part of the population and also most commonly the ones causing damage by feeding on the wood. Swarms of winged termites can be seen at specific times of the year, when temperature and moisture conditions are favorable. TERMITE CONTROL WITH PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS

Even though, termites offer some benefits to man, you still do not want them eating your home. Fortunately, there are ways to curb their appetite. If you are lucky enough not to have termites in your home, you can help keep it that way with perimeter sprays and termite bait stations. Termite bait stations are a great option for monitoring and potentially protecting the home. The way the Termite Stations work, is there are placed around the house about every 10 linear feet apart. The stations come complete with inspection cartridge’s, which will attract the termites into the bait stations, it has been proven that the attractant is strong enough for the foragers to leave the wood from your home to start ingesting the cellulose in the bait stations. You will want to check your stations every 30 days, and monitor for any termite activity, you will see them inside the station when you open the top. If you do find termites, then you remove the inspection portion of the station and replace with the poison portion. You will keep feeding the termites until you stop seeing the termites in the station. Once they start feeding to not allow them to run out of food. It will take about 3 months to eliminate a colony, quicker is possible but it does depend on the size of the colony.

What are my options:

USE BAIT

Termite bait is a good choice when the problem is still small and the damage is limited. By using bait kits from ePestSolutions, it’s easy to limit the damages by eliminating the pests.

Bait should be placed in locations that are near the infestation if it is possible. The insects will bring the poison from the bait back to the colony and die over time. The downside of bait is that it can take some time before the infestation is eliminated. Avoid using bait if the pests have spread throughout the building. There are faster options when the problem has already spread.

CONSIDER WOOD TREATMENTS

Although extermination is a good choice, ePestSolutions provides wood treatment options that can help prevent the insects from spreading throughout a home or property. The treatments are used directly on the wood so that it repels the insects or kills them when they start to damage the wood.

The downside of the treatment is that it cannot be used on every item that may be eaten by termites. Paper, books, and insulation may still be damaged by termites.

SOIL TREATMENT

Another option is to do a perimeter treatment all the way around the structure, you will need to dig a trench and mix the termiticide that you choose, along with water and then fill in the trench with the chemical. It might seem a little labor intensive but it will be a long term protection for termites and really worth the effort. If the last time you had a barrier termite treatment was 5 years ago it may be time to do another treatment, termiticides that are in heavy rain and wet areas, will be prone to quicker degradation. We have a how to guide on our help page for step by step instructions on the soil treatment.

For the ultimate in termite treatment and monitoring is to use both termiticide in the soil and termite bait stations. You can not only rest assured that if they make it to the soil close to the structure they will come in contact with the termiticide in the soil and colony elimination will occur, and you can also check stations to see if you have any new activity in the area, this is usually advisable if you are in a high termite population.

There are several effective methods recommended for termite control. Subterranean termites can be treated with a chemical barrier, which is a termiticide that kills when they leave or enter the colony. Repellents such as Masterline Permerthrin and Talstar can be used to keep termites from infesting treated areas. Repellents are effective for treating areas that are not suspected in having been infested, where as non-repellents will work to kill off an existing infestation. Termiticide product labels specify application instructions, but most can be completed without the use of expensive equipment.

Termite treatments are applied by digging trenches around the foundation that are then treated with the insecticide. In slabs and concrete treatments, use of a hammer drill is required to drill holes that will ultimately have insecticide placed inside, and then be resealed. Safety equipment is recommended, such as Tyvek suits, gloves and protective eyewear.
