Pest Control Products with Pyrethroids

What is a Pyrethroid?

Pyrethroids are a group of man-made pesticides similar to the natural pesticide pyrethrum, which is produced from chrysanthemum flowers. First developed in 1973, synthetic pyrethroids are found in many products used for agricultural spraying and also urban pest products such as household insecticides, pet sprays and shampoos.

Pyrethroids can be separated into 2 groups according to their chemistry.  They can also be separated into generations with the first generation being the oldest and the fourth being the newest pyrethroids.

Type I pyrethroids do not have an a-cyano group, Bifenthrin, permethrin, remethrin, are a few types of this Pyrethroids.  These were introduced in the 1960‘s and were a lower cost alternative to pyrethrin.

Type II Pyrethroids have a-cyano froup that enhances the insecticidal activity and molecular stability.  Type II pyrethroids include cypermethrin, cyfluthrin, deltamethrin, fenvalerate, lambda-cyhalothrin.  These chemicals provide excellent residual effectiveness, especially for controlling german cockroaches.  Pyrethroid formulations include wettable powders, emulsifiable concentrates, microencapsulates, aerosols, dists, tablets, granules and flowables.

What makes them better than Pyrethrins?

Synthetic pyrethroids are more stable in light and have higher insecticidal activity than products made from chrysanthemum flowers. Because of this efficacy, only small amounts of pyrethroids need be applied to control pests (about 100 grams/hectare).

Why Pyrethroids Are a Great Solution For Your Pest Control Needs

They are very effective and mirror Pyrethrin based chemicals yet they are most cost effective to produce and therefore cost less to apply. Pyrethroid products will also have a much longer residual than Pyrethrin products.
