The short answer, OH YES HE DID!

Recently we were on a short vacation and had friends doing basic watering for our garden.  After our five day hiatus, we were anxious to return home to pick our eggplants and turn them into a delicious crawfish eggplant dressing. Upon our arrival home, we rushed to the garden to find ALL of the eggplants had been hollowed out and devoured by ANTS.  I was shocked.  I had never seen ants move in and cause such complete destruction before.

I was so sad.

So now I’m over the sad, and onto the revenge. I don’t know if it was because I was gone, or if it would have happened anyway, but I never saw those ants coming.  It seemed like one day nothing and the next day, all was lost. In the future, I’ll be sure to take more precautions to keep ants out of the garden. It is an especially sensitive process since we can’t just ladle in ant poison since we plan on EATING what is growing there. I’ve done some research and have found a few helpful hints on ant control in your vegetable garden.

1. Regularly sprinkle D E or diatomaceous earth around the base of your plants.  Yes, if it gets wet, it is null and void, butDE is inexpensive and earth friendly. It is readily available and if it keeps them from moving in, it is worth the weekly light sprinkling. Ask my lonely crawfish, they’ll tell you.
2. Bait ‘em,bait ‘em, bait ‘em…Move them away from your veggies and into a safe ant bait, where they can pick up a little treat to bring back to the Queenie.  Hopefully, this will keep ant numbers down and your vegetable numbers up.
3. Try a sprinkling of cinnamon if you like, around the base of the plants as well.  Supposedly, they do not like the smell.  As with DE, rain will wash it away.  Perhaps a cinnamon stick, staked right next to your most prized veggie might give you an added boost.  Just a thought. I’ll try it out and let you know how it goes.
4. Now there are those who say to plant mint, geraniums, and rosemary in the vegetable garden as deterrent, and I don’t think it can hurt.  But, there was a small mint plant right next to my eggplant…nuff said.
5. If you see them marching in (as the song goes), spray their trail down with a dish soap and water solution and wipe it away.  They walk in those lines for a reason and need the scent to follow the trail.  This method is fine for in or outside of thehome. It will at least slow them down.
6. Check with your local pest control supplier for chemical options for outdoor ant control if additional measures are needed.

Inspect area for ant activity and conditions conducive to infestation of ants.

• Are there food sources readily available that would be inviting for ants?
• Check potted plants for signs of ant’s activity.
• Do you have large cracks or crevices allowing ants to travel into your home?
• Are garbage receptacles located very near your home?

Recommend corrective measures for conditions that are conducive to ants.

• If you see that you are making it easy for ants to invade your home, rectify the conditions in number one tolimit the accessibility of your home to ants.
• Repair cracks and entry way accessibility and practice good sanitation.
• Move debris, garbage and large brush from near your home.

Whether your ants are indoor or outdoor will dictate the types of control method that will be available for use to eliminate your ant problem. Read any labels carefully.  Some products are not water proof and may be completely ineffective if used in areas that have moisture.  The products should give clear recommendations for efficacy and usage.

The workers of the Bigheaded ant is dimorphic meaning there are 2 different sizes of workers and they can range from 1.5 to 4.5 mm.  The major workers have an unusually large heart-shaped head.  The body color ranges from dark brown to shades of res to light yellow.  The workers are easy to identify, because of this large distinctive head, if they can be located, but you can use peanut butter to lure them.

The colonies can reach enormous sizes with extended nests and multiple queens.  They typically nest in the ground and next to foundations , in some cases creating mud tubes that have been mistaken for subterranean termites.  Potted plants can be way that Bigheaded ants make their way inside the home.  Ants prefer easy to move loose soil such as flower beds and potted plants.   But most infestations start outside and under a slab.

They will feed on a wide variety of food types, but their natural food diet consists of both live and dead insects, seeds and honeydew.

Controlling the Bigheaded ant can be difficult but identifying the species correctly and locating the nests, entry points and trails will assist in your successful elimination of the ant colonies.  You can locate a nest by using drops of honey, deiced up insects like crickets and mealworms on index cards and placing them wherever you are seeing the ants.  For the Bigheaded ant using peanut butter will do a good job of attracting them then you can follow the worker back to the nest location. 

Long term success will depend on sanitation, moisture damage and elimination of water source, cracks in the foundation, depth of mulch, removal of stacks or piles that are located to close to the structure.  And also treating plants that are infested with honey dew producing insects. 

Ant control requires a broad-based treatment strategy that often includes residual insecticides, using a non repelling insecticide will make your treatment much more effective and prevent any satalite colonies from forming.  Ants nesting within a wall void can be treated with a dusts or aerosol.  Ants nesting within the soil can be drenched with a water-based residual treatment.  The Big headed ant will be attracted to food sources that are protein, sweet , seeds and insects.    The Gourmet Ant Bait will work effectively on the Bigheaded Ant.  Placement of the bait should be in the areas you are already seeing the ants, whether inside the window ledge or on your cabinets.

Proper knowledge of the Bigheaded ant and it’s characteristics will help  you be more successful in your control methods.  Remember ants can be difficult to control and may take multiple treatments to completely eliminate an ant colony.

Apply non repellent in a band around the structure and in other areas where needed and permitted by the label.  Sprinkle InTice Granular Bait right on top of the non-repellent treatment.  The application doesn’t need to be perfectly uniform, since pests are looking for bait (food), not trying to avoid it.  Ants will enter the treated Zone pick up the bait and head directly back to the nest.  This provides more efficient transfer of the non-repellent back to the nest, as well as the “double-whammy” effect of the bait and the non-repellent together.  Never use repellent pyrethroid granules in combination with non-repellents.  This will chase pests away from the non-repellent and defeat the purpose of the treatment.

Fire ants are active most of the year in areas where they are a pest. During cooler seasons these pests are more active and are more likely to respond to your pest management operations. Top Choice can be applied at any time of year but for best results, apply the granules in Spring of the year of Autumn. Spring time is the best for optimal control. As with any long-term ant control product, your best results will be seen by applying the product just prior to the ants most active period or at first sign of infestation. During hot summer months fire ants are visible and are indeed active.

Fipronil, the active ingredient in TopChoice granules, is a slow-acting insecticide. This means that you will not usually see immediate results after application. This slow action is an advantage when getting rid of ants and fire ants. The social life of an ant colony is an important to remember when controlling the pests. Ants do indeed “socialize” in their daily routines, constantly touching each other. This constant and repetitive contact will rapidly spread the insecticide throughout the colony of ants. Once an ant has contaminated itself by foraging through areas treated with Fipronil or has fed on objects in the treated area, the ant will spread Fipronil to each ant it comes into contact with and these ants will spread to insecticide to other ants. You want to make sure that the proper amount of insecticide granules are distributed evenly over the effected area. Gaps in protection will lead to poor control or even failure to kill the targeted pest.

Chances of insect exposure are extremely high because the capsules stay on the surface where they’re applied and won’t bind to organic matter or be absorbed in porous surfaces. When insects crawl across the barrier, they pick up microcapsules on their hairs and body triggering a rapid release of the active ingredient that is absorbed by the insect’s exoskeleton. This mobile lethal dose of microcapsules can also be ingested during the grooming process. Contact time required to receive a lethal dose is very short because of the ease that the insect picks up capsules and the fast diffusion of the cyfluthrin.
