Raccoons!
Raccoons are a small omnivorous animal which is native to North America. They are easily recognizable by their black masked face, three ring tail, this gray fur coat and tiny little paws which resemble human hands because of their opposable thumbs.
Raccoons like to live in a variety of places such as hollow trees, under logs even in chimneys, attics, and crawl spaces. They are generally nocturnal creatures; however an especially hungry raccoon can be seen foraging for food during daylight hours.
Raccoons can cause a variety of problems around the home such as damage to insulation, destroy air ducts, and contaminate the area with feces and urine. Raccoons can also carry rabies, and a variety of parasites; even raccoon roundworm which can be transmitted to humans.
Another thing about raccoons, they can cause a great deal of excitement around the house as they did at our home over the weekend. Our dog decided to sound the alarm just before bedtime last night and sure enough upon further investigation I discovered a family of raccoons living in my garage. Wonderful.
I decided that catch and relocate was the best plan of action.
I chose to use the Havahart Cage Trap to trap our new little house guests.
When baiting a trap for raccoons one can use Pro-Pest Professional Lures for Raccoons, or anything else you would think a raccoon would love to have for dinner, be it a can of cat food, or a dog biscuit (such as our house guests have discovered).
This morning when we awoke and checked the trap we were the proud owners of a snarling, spewing, angry little masked creature. We relocated him this morning and I am quite sure we will begin the process all over again tonight!
