Often times we find that the seasonal temperature and moisture changes may also bring with it, an insect pest that is not our usual house pest. In this article, we will discuss ways to minimize this occurrence and keep occasional pests out of doors. Examples of common types of ‘occasional’ pests are earwigs, centipedes, box elder bugs, crickets and lady bugs.
When conditions become unfavorable to their propagation out of doors, these insect home invaders will look for anyway possible to move into a better situation. Cracks in foundations, poorly sealed doorways, and poorly kept window screens can offer easy access to the insect invader. They may be searching for additional moisture or food sources, so it is important to keep moisture levels in your home low, and minimize any other insects that might be possible food for the occasional invader. It is necessary to seal as many insect entry points as possible.
The next step is to modify the habitat surrounding your home by minimizing plants, mulch and lighting directly around your home. You can extend gravel or rock beds to a distance of at least 12” around your home, and begin plant beds out from there. Use low wattage yellow bug lights or sodium vapor lights near your home, which are much less attractive to insects.
Mechanical methods of control include vacuuming regularly to remove pests that have already moved into your home to stop them from spreading. Sticky traps are inexpensive and can be placed near insect entry points to monitor for insect access to your home. If only one or two are noted on the sticky trap, you can rest a little, but if you notice that numerous insects are being caught by the trap, stronger control measures may be warranted. Another mechanical option is a fly light trap that can attract the insect away from your home, instead of into it.
The next step would be to enlist chemical methods of control, which would be a perimeter spray directly onto the ground surrounding your home. This will create a ‘barrier’ of protection to reduce the numbers of insects that cross from the outdoors into your home. Insecticide spray’s that contain a pyrethroid are a good option. You can use a nozzle type sprayer to get directly into the homes cracks and crevices.
For the interior of your home, be sure that you do not have excess moisture levels in any rooms or under sinks. Use an insecticide rated for indoor use along base boards, under sinks, and across entry ways. This will help with other insects as well, that may be food sources for your occasional invaders.
Make sure that anything that is sprayed with an insecticide has dried completely before allowing children or pets back into the area.

In light of recent reports by the CDC of bed bug insecticide related poisonings, we discuss measures to protect you and your family from becoming a pesticide poisoning statistic.

With the recent increase in bed bug activity in the US, there has also been an increase in the misuse of chemical treatment applications by homeowners. The CDC reports, “A total of 111 illnesses associated with bed bug–related insecticide use were identified; although 90 (81%) were low severity, one fatality occurred…The most common factors contributing to illness were excessive insecticide application, failure to wash or change pesticide-treated bedding, and inadequate notification of pesticide application. Although few cases of illnesses associated with insecticides used to control bed bugs have been reported, recommendations to prevent this problem from escalating include educating the public about effective bed bug management.”

How can you protect your family from becoming a statistic in pesticide poisoning?

Education: As with all pest control products, the DIY pest controller needs to be educated about the use of both chemical and non chemical methods of control. Your local extension service, internet or pest control specialist can shed light on the many ways to avoid pests in the first place and to limit reoccurrence.

Prevention: Utilize as many prevention measures as possible to reduce your need for chemical applications. Make your home an unwelcome place for household pests by reducing access through cracks and crevices. Limit their access to water and food sources by maintaining good sanitation and checking your home for leaks, even tiny ones.

Early Detection: Be aware of common pests in your geographic region and keep an eye out for signs and symptoms related to infestation. Most all pests have some early warning signs that the educated DIY pest controller can identify. It is easier to handle small areas instead of having to deal with a full scale infestation.

Treat the right pest, the right way: Not all chemicals treat all pests. By using the wrong chemical on the wrong pest, you may only scatter your problem to other areas of your home, creating more work for yourself in the end. If unsure, consult with a professional. Most online pest control suppliers have a “help desk” that you can submit inquiry to.

Read, and I mean READ, Labeling: Many of the pesticide poisonings resulted from persons using pesticides rated for outdoor application indoors.

Do not exceed application rates: The pesticide labeling will tell you what the chemical is rated for and the application rates. More is NOT always better when you are protecting your home and family.

Do not reenter your home too soon after application: Even with the right application rates, give your home time to air out, especially when using foggers. Do not reenter prior to the recommended reentry rates listed on the fogger.

Make sure all fabrics that have received application have dried completely: If you are applying pest control products directly to any fabric surface, the fabrics need to have dried before you come into contact with them.

Keep all pesticides out of reach of animals and children: As with all potentially dangerous chemicals, make sure that they are stored far out of reach of little hands and paws.

In this article we discuss ways to pest proof your
home to keep pests out of your home as the cool weather drives them in. By
utilizing prevention, we are able to avoid infestation.

With cooler temperatures arriving, many pests begin looking
for a warm spot to weather the winter, and that spot is your home. We will
discuss ways to pest proof your home and stop them from getting inside in the
first place.

1. Screens should be installed on all
windows. Take this change of season to inspect them for holes or tears that
might start letting pests in. The finer the mesh, the greater the protection.

2. Seals around doors should be checked
for dry rot or installed if you are without them. If light or air is getting
in, then pests can too. If you don’t have door seals, it looks like you have a weekend project in line.

3. Utility or cable lines are also spots
that can be culprits for letting unwanted pests in. You can use a foam sealer
to spray and fill in the cracks to keep pests out.

4. Foundations, soffit and facsia, and
exterior walls should be checked for cracks and sealed or repaired as
needed. A good outdoor caulk may be just the ticket for smaller cracks in seams
or siding.

5. Signs of moisture are bad for you but
good for bugs. Locate any areas that are holding moisture and you’ll find the
area that pests will flock to. Check for condensation on pipes that are causing
moisture to gather.

6. Garbage receptacle placement should be
away from the home to keep pests from taking a free ride in. Now is a good time
to hose them out and clean around the area, remember to move any rotting leaves or
debris.

7. Attic vents can be pest proofed by
installing pest proof mesh over the access points. While this won’t work for
smaller insects, it will keep the mammalian pests from becoming tenants.

8. Be up to date on pet pest prevention and don’t let Fido’s flea and tick prevention lag.

Preventing pests from riding in on your animal is much easier than trying to treat your home.

Also, keep their food in sealed containers and don’t leave food out all day long.

9. Keep your recyclables rinsed before
placing them in the recycle bin. Little bits of food is enough to call and
sustain a number of unwanted pests.

10. Take trash out regularly and reduce clutter
to help keep pests from having a place to hide and feel at home.

By taking a few of these precautions, you can keep unwanted pests out of your
home, avoid infestation and reduce the need for other treatments later.

On a daily basis, we hear the phrases, “Go Green”, “Live Green”, and the like. But in our day to day lives, it can be daunting to manage all life’s to-do lists, and still act responsibly towards our environment. Between the morning rushes, two full time busy work days, taxi-ing Billy and Suzy to sports and lessons, there is hardly a moment to think. So when we are faced with an army of black ants marching into our kitchen, it seems much easier to just go to the corner dollar store and pick up the nearest can of Kill-a-Bug and get to work.

There are, although, numerous options for those of us who do wish to act responsibly towards our environment while killing pests that have not been available before. Previously, we were given lists of herbs and essential oils to measure, crush, steep and squeeze in our efforts to kill bugs in an eco friendly manner. In a perfect world, where we are afforded endless amounts of time and resources, this is a viable option. But for main stream America, this is one more item on the to-do list that just won’t get crossed off, despite all of our good intentions.

There are numerous new products and a revival of some older ones that now make killing bugs the eco-friendly way much more accessible. One product is microbial pesticides that are able to use a specific microorganism to target specific pests. They are less damaging to our environment, because they do not affect other pests that are not targeted. There are also biochemical pesticides, like insect sex pheromones, that use non toxic methods to interfere with the pests natural processes to control it. There are totally green pest control products that contain oils and repellents all mixed together that make staying green easier.

A few tried and true methods use naturally occurring substances like diatomaceous earth. This is not damaging to our environment at all but is deadly to pests such as fleas, ants and slugs. Others are use boric acid based products, which, while still not something you can eat, it is not as harmful to the environment and does the trick of killing numerous household pests. There are also a plethora of products that repel pests by using plant extracts, spices and essential oil additives. Therefore, all of the measuring, crushing, steeping and squeezing needed to exterminate your household pests is pre-done for you. For someone who wants a little more kill and wants to meet in the middle the same eco friendly products come in a ECOPCO pest control product line, that have oils and also some low risk pesticides that leave less of an imprint on our environment.

A good pest control supplier will have a “green” section that you can dig through to find exactly what you need to control the pests in your home while still feeling like you are not damaging our planet in the process. It should explain exactly what pest it targets and how. You can also visit www.epa.gov to see what the EPA views as “safe” or “environmentally-friendly” pest control products. Green pest control and peace of mind may be able to fit into your schedule after all.

Long-Lasting Protection Against a long list of Pests.

Demand cs with iCAP technologyTM solves the most difficult insect pest control problems. Among those are mosquitoes, which are more than just a nuisance to your customers. They also transmit the deadly West Nile Virus. Demand CS helps you control this problem for your customers.

Demand CS is the most active pyrethroid pest control you can use.

Its exclusive iCAP technology packs up to 10,000 powerful capsules of insecticide into every square inch of surface you treat.

And Demand CS doesn’t just work better, it works longer. Studies show that Demand CS is up to 200 times more active than other insecticides

on flies, spiders, mosquitoes, bedbugs and other insects. That’s because Demand’s iCAP technology shields the active ingredient lambda-cyhalothrin from UV rays, pH extremes and absorption into porous surfaces. So it remains intact longer, ready to be released when an insect makes contact.

ADVANCED iCAP TECHNOlOGY FOR ADVANCED CONTROL

Demand CS combines an advanced-generation pyrethroid

with a unique capsule suspension formulation for outstanding protection against numerous perimeter insect pests. Essentially, Demand CS consists of thousands of tiny capsules that hold their shape and stay where applied over an extended period of time.

Once applied, the capsules remain on the surface – rather than being absorbed into it – so they are readily available for contact with insects for weeks and months. Because the capsules are lipophilic, they almost magnetically stick to pests as they land on treated surfaces.

Control comes through direct contact of the insect with the capsules, with lambda-cyhalothrin transferring from the capsule through the cuticle of the insect, or by ingestion.

Demand CS is versatile and convenient. It can be used outdoors for perimeter applications and barrier treatments, as well as indoors for both clean-out and maintenance. This product can be used on porous and non-porous surfaces with little to no odor or staining.

Demand CS effectively controls over 30 different types of insects, including:

Ants

Bedbugs

Bees

Boxelder Bugs

Carpet Beetles

Centipedes

Cigarette Beetles

Cockroaches

Confused

Flour Beetles Crickets

Firebrats

Fleas*

Flies

Lesser Grain Borers

Millipedes

Mosquitoes

Pillbugs

Red Flour Beetles

Rice Weevils

Saw-toothed Grain Beetles

Scorpion

Silverfish

Ticks

Wasps

*Outdoor use only

DEMAND CS OFFERS ADDED BENEFITS TO PEST MANAGEMENT PROFESSIONALS

When you are needing to do your own pest control a perimeter spraying with a residual chemical is adviseable. At ePestSolutions we have everything you will need to treat your home like a pro. By treating the inside and the outside you will end up using less chemical and see less insects in the long run.

You will want to simply mix 0.8 ounces per gallon ( Please follow directions on labels for each product) in a sprayer, spray the exterior walls of the house, kitchen ( under cabinets, dishwashers) in the bathroom spray under the sinks and bath traps. Concentrate in places where there is moisture, for the most part that is where roaches and ants will be located. Spray the entry point areas, doors, cracks plumbing pentretrations, etc. You will want to remove pets and kids till the areas are completely dry.

On the exterior of the house you will want to spray a band about 3 feet wide on the soil area directly away from the house and then up the sides of the house about 4 feet in a band. Again Treat the entry points, door frames, window frames, weep holes. The exterior treatment should prevent insects from making it inside the house and in most cases will eliminate the need to treat the inside but maybe once a year.
