Do It Yourself Pest Control – It's Not Rocket Science!

Do it yourself pest control is not as daunting as it may seem. There were times when you
had to really know what you were doing and had to wear all sorts of protective equipment.
However, let’s take a look at a guy wanting to treat his own house for carpenter ants back
in the 1960s. He would have bought the best chemicals, i.e. extremely toxic pesticides,
and would have mixed it stronger than was recommended on the label. He probably would
not have worn the personal protective gear that was recommended, like gloves and, most
importantly, a respirator.

He would have crawled under his house and started spraying the pesticide that he had mixed
far too strong and after a few minutes, he would have started feeling funny. After he started
crawling to the opening under his house, he would wake up three days later in the hospital.
As you might have guessed, this is a true story.

Don’t Panic!
Now before you panic, just realize those types of products are not sold in this country
anymore (thank goodness) so do not worry. The point is this: as long as you read and follow
the label on the product you are using, it will be a very safe and effective treatment. The label
will tell you which pest you may use it on, what personal protective gear (PPG) you need, how
to mix the product, how and where to apply the product, how to store the product, and how to
dispose of any unwanted product.

Don’t Glug!
Remember, the label is the law. For best results, follow the directions as closely as possible.
It will not help you to mix it “hotter” as the little critters will not die faster or get any deader,
so follow the mix rates exactly and the pests will die as directed. There are people that start
pouring and count how many glugs come out instead of measuring. Do not be one of those
people your neighbors call a “glugger.”

Contact your favorite online do-it-yourself pesticide retailers and they will have the trained
professionals to help you. They will help you identify the pest, pick the best product, lead
you to the proper application tools, and make sure you have everything you need to get the
job done right. Try to get that kind of service at one of those big box stores and you could be
there a while!
