Living in MY Gutters?

Until I got gutters, I had no idea how annoying and detrimental birds could be.  I’ve always enjoyed watching them circle and swoop, listened to their lovely melodies, and generally just appreciated the gifts that nature had given them.  This was before I became the proud new owner of shiny gutters on our family home.  Since then, as I see them moving in and making themselves at home, creating nests and filling my gutters with debris, I’m beginning to feel like a curmudgeon as I wish the winged creatures away.  But this spring, I’ve decided to DO something about ridding my gutters of birds besides standing on my outdoor table, shouting and waving my arms like a lunatic.  I’m sure that my neighbors and my children will be most appreciative of my new commitment to getting the birds out of the gutters.

In my endeavor to rid our home of nuisance birds, let it be known, no one wants to KILL the birds.  That just isn’t an option.  I was raised with a respect for all life and that won’t be overridden, no matter how annoying these birds have gotten.  I just want to make the birdies go bye bye.  So, I started to do a little research on the internet about birds and how to make them go away.

I also had no idea that in the grand scheme of things, what is an isolated annoyance for my family, is a serious issue for municipalities, airports and industrial companies.  The damage and mayhem that birds cause to these other agencies can be extremely costly and dangerous.  I read story after story about the problems that need to be addressed in bird control, not only regarding their nesting habits, but also the health risks associated with their feces.   For more information on the health hazards, check out this facts sheet.

Alrighty then, enough about the problem, give me the solutions.  So depending on the type of bird problem that you have, there are bird spikes, bird traps, and bird deterrents.

Bird Slide is a kind of bird deterrent which prevents all kind of birds from landing or nesting on its’ surface after it has been installed. Bird Slide completely protects the ledge against all bird species; they simply can’t get a grip and “slide” right off the ledge.

Another deterrent are ultrasonic and sonic methods of pest and bird control that are non-harmful, non-toxic, environmentally friendly and humane.

Bird gel repellants are also a good option that can be applied to a number of different surfaces. Birds are unlikely to land on a surface where the bird deterrent gel is applied. If they do decide to land, they find the sticky and slimy surface to be very uncomfortable and will not stay there for long.

Bird spikes are a deterrent made of durable stainless steel spikes in Lexan base. They are perfect as a bird repellent to deter pigeons and larger birds and can be used for ledges, parapets, signs, beams, pipes, chimneys, cut-outs, lights, etc.

So if birds are your problem, there definitely are answers.  All you have to do is decide which one is best for your bird issue.  Happy Deterring!
