How to Make Your Havahart Trap More Successful

When you are thinking about using Live animal traps to help with your pest problem having the right trap and knowing how to set it properly will help make your trapping more successful.

Havahart manufacturers a very large selection of traps in many different sizes and are specific for animal types.  Havahart® live animal traps are constructed of sturdy rust-resistant wire mesh with steel reinforcements for long life and galvanized for maximum resistance to rust and corrosion. Mesh openings are smaller than competing traps of comparable size to prevent escapes and stolen bait.

Easy Set Two-Door Cage Havahart Traps can be set with either one or two-doors open. A one-door approach is recommended if the two-door approach does not result in a catch. This may indicate that the animal is of a larger size and it is best suited for a one door setting.

To set the trap with 2 doors open, inspect trap to make sure the cable is hooked around the loop.

To set the trap with one door open, dis-engage the cable from the setting loop of the havahart trap.  We suggest wearing gloves when you are handling the trap the contains the animal.

Chipmunks,Rats,Squirrels, Mice will be baited well with Raisins, sliced apples, birdseed, and cheese.

For  Ferret, Mink,Skunks, Opossums, Stray Cat use crisp bacon, fish, fresh vegetables, and cat food.

Bobcat,Nutria bait havahart traps with crisp bacon, fish, and cat food.  Rabbit, Muskrat will be attracted to fresh vegetables, carrots, and apples.

Porcupines,Woodchucks,fresh vegetables Armadillo meal worms, maggots, spoiled meat, over-ripe fruit, sardines, and fish.  Large Squirrels will be attracted to cereals, nuts while Raccoons work best with crisp bacon, fish, fresh

vegetables,  and canned cat food.

You will want to locate you havahart animal trap in an area where animals are often observed.  Place the cage on a level surface and position the side of the cage trap against a wall or building or in the path commonly traveled by the animal.  Check your traps often, you do not want to allow the animal to stay trapped for a long period of time.

You will need to check with your local or state Game Commission to determine the lawful method of disposing of a captured animal.  DO NOT ATTEMPT TO HANDLE CAPTURED ANIMALS.   DO NOT LEAVE CHILDREN UNATTENDED NEAR A CAPTURED ANIMAL.

When you are ready to release the animal, approach the trap cautiously and quietly so you don’t excite the animal.  Stay clear till animal leaves the trap when you release the animal from your Havahart animal trap.
