Glyphosate Herbicide and Glyphosate Products
Glyphosate (N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine) is basically the most commonly used broad-spectrum systemic herbicide used to kill weeds, especially annual broadleaf weeds and annual grasses.
Initially patented and sold by Monsanto Company in the 1970s under the tradename Roundup, its U.S. patent expired in 2000.
Glyphosate is the most used herbicide in the USA.
Glyphosate's mode of action is to inhibit an enzyme involved in the synthesis of the aromatic amino acids: tyrosine, tryptophan and phenylalanine.
The chemical Glyphosate is absorbed through the weeds foliage and translocated to growing points within the plant. Because of, it is only effective on actively growing plants and is not a pre-emergent (something that prevents germination).
