Diquat is an active ingredient that is commonly found in aquatic herbicides, either alone or paired with Glyphosate, most recognizably in brand name Round Up weed control products. As a non-selective, post emergent weed killer that is absorbed through the plants foliage (leaves) and it then travels down through the entire root system of the treated plant. Because it is non-selective, Diquat based products should be applied only to that which is intended for treatment. This active ingredient will remain in the soil after treatment as well, which may restrict future plans for gardening, etc. after the product application.
Diquat products are in a liquid form, and intended to be mixed with label recommended water quantities, and are either applied to plant life in water through spraying or sprayed as a broadcast treatment for lawns, crops and fields. In aquatic applications, Diquat can be used to kill off plant life that is causing space and drainage issues in reservoirs and sewers, as well as other stagnant water collections. Diquat treatment will ensure that plantlife is eliminated, so as to avoid issue with water displacement and flooding. Managing weeds in water collection points is important to make sure that the water has ample space in itís intended collection point.
During application, ensure proper safety precautions are taken to avoid direct contact with the insecticide, including spraying at times of little to no wind. It is important to apply Diquat only to intended areas, and high winds may cause the active ingredient to target unintended spots.
As with any herbicide and insecticide applications, adhere to label specifications for safety and application directions. Because this is an aquatic herbicide, the Diquat levels are monitored in drinking water as a result of application run off into city water supplies.
