Rat and Mouse control products containing Brodifacoum fall into the category of rodent control products known as anticoagulants. The most commonly recognized anticoagulant is Warfarin, and this is also used in pest control programs. Brodifacoum has developed a reputation as an active ingredient in rodent poisons, due to its long lasting and powerful effects. By disrupting Vitamin K functionality in target pests, and building up over time and through repeated ingestion, Brodifacoum results are slightly slower that alternatives, but nonetheless effective. Products with this active ingredient are used to treat rat and mouse infestations both indoors and outdoors, and some products are even labeled to treat larger pests, such as moles and possums. Most common target pests are the house mouse, the roof rat and the Norway rat.
Brodifacoum is ingested by pests, as it is disguised in very appealing bait blocks, that are then placed in areas that have a current infestation. Baits can be kept secured and safe from non-target poisonings by using the specially designed, easy to handle bait stations. Bait stations keep pets and children out of the bait, and also ensure that the bait stays where placed to maximize the number of rodents that are able to feed on it. While Brodifacoum poisonings do have an antidote, it is of course always best to follow all safety recommendations to avoid any issues or accidental ingestions from happening in the first place. Brodifacoum is known to be highly toxic to wildlife such as birds and fish, which also reinforces the use of the noted bait stations.
