Black Widow Spider
How do spiders differ from other arthropods?
Well basically all spiders have 2 body regions, eight legs a pair of pedipals, a pair of jaws and either six or seven simple ( and not very attractive eyes).
All spiders are poisonous, maybe not to us, but most definitely to their prey! Spiders inject venom and or digestive juices into live or recently-killed prey in order to feed. Relatively few spiders are dangerous to humans.
There are over 37,000 species of spiders over the worldwide, hopefully no one has seen them all in their backyard.
The largest spider is a South American Goliath bird-eating spider. The body is about 5 inches and adds another 13 inches on for the legs. “If only we could get them to eat Pigeons?”
Not all spiders are in the web business, which is the prey catching business. Some are active hunters and others passive hunters.
