Professional Bed Bug Products

So what exactly is a bedbug?

Bedbugs are tiny, brown, parasitic insects that survive off of blood from humans and animals. After 1940, bedbugs seemed to be all but eliminated in the US. However, they can be moved through travel, so you can still get an infestation. Bedbugs can reproduce rapidly, so even having just a few bedbugs on your luggage can become a huge problem. Adult bedbugs are only the size of an apple seed, and bedbugs are inherently nocturnal and like to live in small spaces like crevices and cracks, which makes them incredibly difficult to spot. While bedbugs are not deadly and have not been found to transmit any diseases, they can leave painful rashes, and if you find yourself with a bedbug infestation, you should try to eliminate it as soon as possible.

Bedbugs live in colonies of hundreds, and females lay eggs after blood meals. The life cycle of the bedbug includes egg, nymph and adult. The bedbug female can lay about 200 eggs at a rate of three to four a day, and are normally laid in cracks and crevices found in the floor and bed. The eggs will hatch in one or two weeks into Nymphs which will begin feeding immediately, and this period will last from fourteen to thirty days. The bedbugs will shed five times before becoming adults. The adult Bedbugs will mate after maturing. Total time from hatch to egg-laying is four to nine weeks. Because their life cycle is so short, if you leave the problem unattended, you could be dealing with a full-blown infestation within a few months.

Causes of BedBug infestations:

Many times, the way that bedbugs spread is through frequent travel. They are becoming increasingly more common on airplanes and in hotels, and unknowing travelers have stowaway bugs in their luggage as they go from place to place. So, if you get a bedbug infestation, it isn’t because your home is dirty, it’s probably because you or someone you know travelled to a place with bedbugs and then brought them to your home.

How to Spot a Bedbug Infestation:

Although bedbugs have been less of an issue in the US than in earlier decades, their presence is on the rise. Bedbugs can be incredibly harmful to your family’s health, because by nature they are a parasitic species. Bedbugs feed on the blood of humans and animals, which, if you have an infestation, is dangerous for your family and your pets. But, there are some easy ways to spot a bedbug infestation.

Any furniture or floor cracks or beds, upholstered areas, or other small areas are goldmines for infestation. Because they like small areas so much, checking inside clocks, radios, and laptops wouldn’t be a bad idea. Bedbugs are also most active at night, which means that this is also the most popular time for them to feed. They normally feed when you are asleep, and common areas for bedbug bites are the face, neck, and hands. These bites will appear as bumps and may look like a rash.

One trait of bedbugs is that they have a sickly sweet smell about them. This smell usually smells like raspberries, but can also just smell overly sweet. Other signs of an infestation include seeing brown spots (fecal stains), blood, or shells of dead skin from the bedbugs on your sheets. They also will leave tiny bites on your body. The tiny bites normally don’t have to be treated with anything except an over -the-counter anti-itch cream, but they can be a leading sign that you have a bug infestation. If you experience any of these signs, it’s important to seek help immediately.

Steps to take to eliminate bedbugs:

If you believe that you have a bedbug infestation and have identified some of the warning signs, you should begin by taking everything out of the infested room. If it’s in the bedroom, you should disassemble your bed, clean your bedframe, and wash all sheets, pillows, and mattress pads on the bed. After they are all washed, you should put the linens in an airtight bag. You should do the same with any towels that also are in the room. Next, remove any toys, clothes, boxes, or anything else that can be moved, out of the room so that you can vacuum the entire area. And when we say the entire area, we mean everything. Closets, inside drawers, on mattresses, in the hard to reach areas—everywhere. Finally, you’re ready to spread a repellant and get rid of the bugs. Dusting insecticide repellant works the best because it can reach all of the nooks and crannies that normally get missed. And, everything in the room should be spread with dust, including electrical switch plates and any other crevice. You should also dust inside your box spring and inside furniture. Once you’re ready to reassemble the room, you can use bait traps to catch any bedbugs you didn’t get in the initial dusting of the room. Your room should now be bedbug free, and your family can be safe and happy.

Preventing Bedbugs in the Future:

Once you have bedbugs out of your house, you don’t want them to come back. There are certain, easy steps that you can take to reduce the risk of your home being infested with bedbugs. For instance, you can store your luggage in the basement instead of under your bed. You can never be positive if bedbugs are in your baggage, and it’s best to keep the bugs away from your bedroom, where they can easily move to your bed and bite you in the middle of the night. Another way in which you can protect your home is by keeping it clean in general. Basic vacuuming can help create an uninhabitable environment for bedbugs, which keeps them out of your hair. Taking as many precautions as possible to eliminate bedbugs will decrease your chance for an infestation in your home. But, if your bedbugs come back into your home, you shouldn’t worry. ePestsolutions is here to stand by your side and help you through every minute of your infestation problem.
