Silverfish Bait and Aerosol Insecticides for DIY Pest Control
Silverfish and firebrat belong to the insect order Thysanura. Characterized by the three long tail like appendages from the tip of the abdomen. Common names are bristletails, tasseltails, and fringetails. The common silverfish has scales with metallic gray sheen, gray silverfish have bodies covered with dull silver to gray scales.
Silverfish and firebrats may roam long distances for their food source, but once found will remain close to it, they consume carbohydrates and proteins. Silverfish are fond of flour and starch and will attack paper and fabric textiles.
Removing food source as well as managing and regulating humidity can reduce the appeal of any structure. Remove harborage sites by sealing cracks and crevices especially around window sills, cabinets and moldings. The removal of leaf and grass litter and the reduction of food sources are necessary. The use of sticky traps is advice to reduce the number of silverfish and firebrats in an affected area. Residual dust, boric acid, diatomaceous earth applied to cracks and crevices will flush out the silverfish and help control the population. Heavy infestations can be treated with a microencapsulated residual insecticide such as suspend.
