Insect Control Products with Imidacloprid
Imidacloprid is a systemic, chloro-nicotinyl insecticide with soil, seed and foliar uses for the control of sucking insects including rice hoppers, aphids, thrips, whiteflies, termites, turf insects, soil insects and some beetles. This pest control product is most commonly used on rice, cereal, maize, potatoes, vegetables, sugar beets, fruit, cotton, hops and turf, and is especially systemic when used as a seed or soil treatment.
Imidacloprid is a material that is designed to mimic the properties of nicotine, a powerful neurotoxin found naturally in tobacco. The chemical works by interfering with the transmission of stimuli in the insect nervous system. Specifically, it causes a blockage in a type of neuronal pathway (nicotinergic) that is more abundant in insects than in warm-blooded animals (making the chemical selectively more toxic to insects than warm-blooded animals). This blockage leads to the accumulation of acetylcholine, an important neurotransmitter, resulting in the insect's paralysis, and eventually death. It is effective on contact and via stomach action. |

Imidacloprid
Imidacloprid is very systemic, which means it is taken up by plants, and translocated throughout the vascular system. When insects feed on any portion of the plant, they ingest the insecticide and are killed. Imidacloprid is a great product for tree injections, lawn insect control and termite and ant control.
The biological spectrum of imidacloprid covers a broad range of target pests, such as:
- sucking insects: aphids, whiteflies, leaf- and planthoppers, thrips, scales, mealy bugs, bugs, psyllids, phylloxera;
- coleoptera (beetles): leaf beetles (e.g. Colorado potato beetle, rice water weevil), wireworms, grubs, flea beetles;
- others: lepidopterous leafminers, some dipterous pests, termites, locusts, and fleas and ants
Products containing Imidacloprid include Merit 75, Merit 2F, Premise foam, Premise 75, Dominion 2L and Premise 2F.
