Alligare Diuron 80DF may be applied to soil prior to emergence of weeds to control susceptible weed seedlings for an extended period of time. The degree of control and duration of effect will vary with the amount of chemical applied, soil texture, rainfall, and other conditions. Soils high in clay or organic matter require higher dosages than soils low in clay or organic matter for equivalent herbicide performance. Moisture is required to activate the herbicide. Best results occur if rainfall (or sprinkler irrigation) occurs within 2 weeks of application.
Alligare Diuron 80DF applied before emergence of crop and weeds is an effective procedure because susceptible weeds are controlled in an early, vulnerable seedling stage before they compete with the crop. With favorable moisture conditions, Alligare Diuron 80DF continues to control weeds for some time as the crop becomes better able to compete. Should weed seedlings begin to break through the preemergence treatment in significant numbers, secondary weed control procedures should be implemented; these include cultivation and postemergence herbicide application.
Alligare Diuron 80DF may also be used to control emerged weeds. Results vary with rate applied and environmental conditions. Best results are obtained on succulent weeds growing under conditions of high humidity and temperature of 70°F or higher. Addition of a surfactant to the spray (where specified) increases contact effects of Alligare Diuron 80DF.
Alligare Diuron 80DF may be used as a directed post emergence application. Contact of crop foliage and/or fruit with spray or mist must be avoided on the following crops: artichoke, corn (field), cotton, sorghum (grain), sugarcane, and established plantings of apples, bananas, plantains, blueberries, caneberries, gooseberries, citrus, grapes, macadamia nuts, olives, papayas, peaches, pears, pecans, walnuts, and certain tree plantings as injury may occur.
Under specified conditions, Alligare Diuron 80DF without surfactant may be applied over the top of alfalfa (established, dormant, or semi dormant), asparagus (established), birdsfoot trefoil (established, dormant), grass seed crops (established), oats, red clover (established, dormant), sugarcane, wheat, and pineapple.
NON-AGRICULTURAL USE REQUIREMENTS
The requirements in this box apply to uses of this product that are not within the scope of the Worker Protection Standard for agricultural pesticides (40 CFR Part 170). The WPS applies when this product is used to produce agricultural plants on farms, forests, nurseries, or greenhouses.
Non-crop weed control is not within the scope of the Worker Protection Standard. Keep unprotected persons out of treated areas until sprays have dried.
Dispersible Granule For the control of grasses and weeds on non-cropland areas, irrigation and drainage ditches; and for the control of algae and aquatic weeds in ponds and dugouts.
Non-Crop Weed Control
Diuron 80 DF is an effective general herbicide for the control of many annual and perennial grasses and herbaceous weeds such as dandelion, goldenrod, thistle and milkweed on non-cropland areas where bare ground is desired. After an extended period of time, regrowth of plantain, thistle or wild carrot will indicate that re-treatment is necessary.
Diuron 80 DF may be used at any time, except when ground is frozen, providing adequate moisture is received by rainfall or artificial means. Best results are obtained when applied shortly before weed growth begins. Dense growth should be removed. The degree of control and duration of effect will vary with the amount of chemical applied, soil type, rainfall, and other conditions.
General Weed Control
The actual rates required to control most weeds for an extended period of time vary depending on soil type, weed species present and duration of control desired. On sands and sandy loams, apply 14-27 kg Diuron 80 DF per ha. On clays or high organic soils, apply 40-55 kg/ha. The lower rate within the respective soil classifications should be used where annuals predominate and where one season's control is desired. Where perennials predominate and where more than one season's control is required, use the higher rates. To extend the control, a follow-up treatment of 1.1 kg may be used to control annuals and seedlings.
Irrigation and Drainage Ditches
Apply 0.25-0.75 kg per 100 m2 (23-67 kg/ha). For irrigation ditches apply during the non-crop season, and when ditch is not in use. To minimize movement of Diuron 80 DF with irrigation water and avoid crop injury, it is essential that it be fixed in the treated soil by moisture. Apply before expected seasonal rainfall, if possible when soil in the ditch is still moist.
If rainfall has not totaled at least 10 cm following treatment and before intended use of irrigation ditch, fill with water and allow to stand for 72 hours; drain off and waste remaining water before using ditch. Do not treat any ditch area into which roots of trees or other desirable plants may extend,
For Control of Algae and Aquatic Weeds in Ponds and Dugouts Diuron 80 DF is recommended for the control of algae, including filamentous types, and certain aquatic weeds in ponds and dugouts which have little or no water flow-through. Treatment is not effective in flowing water. The lower recommended rates control algae for several weeks; higher use rates extend algae control and usually control aquatic weeds such as naiads (Najas), pondweed (Potamogeton), duckweed (Lemna), bladderwort (Utricularia), and Chara.
Use at rates of 0.5 to 2 parts per million (ppm) diuron; use the lower rates for weed control and the higher rates for aquatic weeds and for extended algae control.
Diuron 80DF Herbicide Labeled Application Rates:
3-4 lb per acre on selected crops - See Label for specific crops listed
For non-crop weed control, use 5-10 lb per acre
See label for all usage details and for weeds controlled

Q: Diuron 80 DF Description states can be used for treating algae and certain aquatic weeds in ponds. However, both the Label and MSDS state do not apply to surface water and do not contaminate surface water. Seems contradictory. Is it safe to use in farm ponds with fish and other animals? If so, at what application rate?
